In a significant leap forward for India’s defense sector, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is slated to receive around 700 units of the enhanced Astra Mark 2 missile. This indigenous air-to-air missile, developed by the DRDO, will feature a combat range exceeding 200 kilometers. This upgrade represents a crucial step in maintaining India’s technological superiority in aerial combat, particularly in beyond-visual-range scenarios. The development comes as the IAF has previously showcased its capability to engage targets at extensive distances. The Astra Mark 2 missiles are planned for integration with key IAF platforms like the Sukhoi and Light Combat Aircraft (LCA). This initiative is a testament to India’s growing self-reliance in producing advanced defense systems, reducing dependence on foreign suppliers and strengthening its strategic posture.
