Tragedy struck the Tantanagar police station area in West Singhbhum when the body of Kunal Birua, a 15-year-old student, was recovered from the Sangam River after four days of searching. Kunal had gone picnicking and playing football with friends by the river on Saturday. While playing, he ventured into the deeper parts of the river and tragically drowned. After extensive search efforts, police, with the crucial assistance of local villagers and expert divers, managed to pull the body out.
An overwhelming sense of sorrow has enveloped the community following this heartbreaking discovery. Kunal’s family is deeply distressed. Authorities, including the Chaibasa Sadar SDO, Sandeep Anurag Topno, and DSP Bahaman Tuti, were promptly on the scene. They gathered comprehensive information about the incident and also addressed the situation at the Nagar police station, where 24 youths were questioned, facilitating the return of the students and restoring normalcy.
Kunal was a promising student at Saint Xavier’s School, Chaibasa. Witnesses reported that the ball rolled into the river during a football game, prompting Kunal to retrieve it. His attempt to do so tragically led to him getting caught in the river’s depth. The body has been transported to Chaibasa Sadar Hospital for a post-mortem. The police have launched an investigation to understand the full circumstances surrounding this unfortunate drowning. Officials continue to extend support and sympathy to the bereaved family.
