In a significant ruling, a federal judge has dismissed Drake’s defamation case against Universal Music Group concerning Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us.” Judge Jeannette A. Vargas determined that the song’s accusations, including those of pedophilia, should be viewed as artistic opinion within the context of a heated rap feud. The court noted that the “broader context of a heated rap battle, with incendiary language and offensive accusations hurled by both participants, would not incline the reasonable listener to believe that ‘Not Like Us’ imparts verifiable facts.” Drake’s January lawsuit alleged that UMG, as the parent label, was responsible for publishing and promoting the track, claiming it contained false claims and incited violence, thereby damaging his reputation and brand. Universal Music Group welcomed the decision, calling the lawsuit an “affront to all artists and their creative expression” and emphasizing their ongoing support for Drake’s career.
