Tesla, the electric car manufacturer founded by Elon Musk, introduced the Model Y in India on July 15, 2025. Deliveries of the vehicle commenced towards the end of September, approximately two months following the launch. Tesla delivered 60 Model Y units to Indian customers before the end of September. This initial delivery figure is a notable launch for Tesla in the Indian market, representing its debut vehicle offering.
Data from vehicle portals reveal that BMW sold 307 electric vehicles, Mercedes-Benz sold 95, and Volvo sold 22 within the same timeframe. With the delivery of 60 units, priced around ₹60 lakh (ex-showroom), Tesla’s Model Y is set to compete with established European brands in the luxury EV market.
The Tesla Model Y is offered in two primary variants:
* Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) with a range of 500 km (WLTP standard)
* Long Range RWD with a range of 622 km
Currently, the RWD variant is being delivered, and deliveries of the Long Range model are expected in the following months. The Model Y has a starting price of ₹59.89 lakh (ex-showroom). Tesla started taking Model Y bookings in July and has secured over 600 orders. Despite this, the order count is slightly below the initial projections. Originally, Tesla aimed to import 2,500 units annually; however, due to the current demand, the company has revised the import target to 350 to 500 units annually. Tesla is expected to speed up deliveries of the Model Y around the Diwali holiday.
