The Indian cricket team welcomes back Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for the ODI series against Australia. The return of these experienced players has put the spotlight on their roles, particularly with the 2027 World Cup in mind and their sustained presence in the format under scrutiny. The squad announcement was accompanied by questions regarding Virat Kohli’s fitness tests. All centrally contracted players usually undertake fitness tests at the BCCI’s National Cricket Academy (NCA) and Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru. While players like Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Siraj participated in tests, Kohli’s absence created a stir. Reports emerged suggesting Kohli completed his fitness tests privately in London, with the results later provided to the CoE, which sparked criticism from fans and analysts. Ajit Agarkar, during a press conference, addressed the matter directly, providing context and seeking to quell the controversy. He confirmed that both Kohli and Sharma had fulfilled the necessary fitness requirements. Agarkar stated that, as far as he knew, the players had met the established fitness norms. He also clarified that before selections, the CoE provides the fitness statuses of the players, and those selected were cleared as fit and available. Both Kohli and Sharma will aim to demonstrate their capabilities on the field, hoping to cement their places in the team and possibly aim for a spot in the 2027 World Cup.
