The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced that Rs 2,000 notes worth Rs 5,884 crore are still in circulation, according to data released on October 1. Although the RBI withdrew these notes from circulation on May 19, 2023, they remain legal tender. The RBI’s statement highlighted that the total value of Rs 2000 banknotes in circulation, which was Rs 3.56 lakh crore on May 19, 2023, has significantly decreased to Rs 5,884 crore by September 30, 2025. The central bank stated that approximately 98.35% of the Rs 2000 banknotes previously in circulation have since been returned.
