The United States, in a recent shift, has signaled its disinterest in mediating the Kashmir dispute, indicating a win for India’s diplomatic efforts. A high-ranking official from the US State Department clarified that the Kashmir issue is a matter for direct negotiation between India and Pakistan. This announcement comes as a potential setback for Pakistan, which has been actively seeking international intervention on the matter.
The official further stated that the United States will allow India and Pakistan to manage the issue. Highlighting the adherence to the ‘America First’ policy, the US prioritizes its own interests in matters concerning both countries. India, for its part, has always preferred a bilateral approach to resolve the Kashmir dispute, and this recent US statement is viewed as a reflection of India’s influence.
According to the official, the US assesses India and Pakistan through separate lenses, aligning its actions with what serves American interests under its ‘America First’ strategy.
Amidst a press conference, the official mentioned that President Trump already has many pressing issues to address. Nevertheless, if assistance is requested, the US is willing to help.
Despite Trump’s claims at the UN General Assembly about preventing conflict between India and Pakistan, the State Department official acknowledged the US involvement and its role in facilitating a ceasefire.
India has persistently maintained that third-party involvement is not welcome in talks with Pakistan, especially regarding sensitive issues like terrorism and Kashmir, maintaining that the dialogue should be bilateral. In contrast, the US has often raised the Kashmir issue at international forums. The recent statement aligns with India’s long-standing position.
In response to the Pahalgam terrorist attack on April 22, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7. Pakistan retaliated with attacks on India, which the Indian armed forces responded to with courage. The three-day conflict ended with a ceasefire on May 10, which was first announced by Trump on social media.
Since the ceasefire on May 10, Trump has frequently claimed credit for de-escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, which India has denied.
