In a recent meeting, Donald Trump indicated that Ukraine has the potential to regain all territories currently under Russian control. The former U.S. President made these remarks after meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the United Nations General Assembly. Trump’s post on social media clarified his stance, stating, ‘I believe that with the assistance of the European Union, Ukraine can fight and restore its original form. This can be achieved through time, patience, and financial backing from Europe, particularly NATO, to reach the pre-war borders.’ During a bilateral meeting, when asked if NATO should shoot down Russian aircraft entering its airspace, Trump responded affirmatively. When asked if he still trusts Putin, he said he would answer in a month. Trump believes that with the EU’s help, Ukraine can fight and win, reclaiming its original territory. The post didn’t touch upon new U.S. sanctions or tariffs on Russia’s energy sector. Trump has discussed these issues with European leaders. It also omitted any discussion of direct U.S. arms sales to Ukraine; instead, it implied that NATO members would continue acquiring U.S. weaponry and then transfer it to Ukraine.
