The fervor of Sharadiya Navratri grips the nation as devotees pay homage to Maa Durga. In Ranchi, Jharkhand, a unique Durga Puja tradition is observed by the Gorkha community, specifically the Jharkhand Armed Force One (JAP-1) since 1880. This puja stands out for its distinctive rituals and unwavering devotion.
Instead of a traditional idol, a kalash is installed to represent the goddess. The festivities kick off with a gun salute to Maa Durga, a symbolic gesture of respect and reverence, performed by the JAP-1 soldiers using their modern weaponry. This act is believed to fortify the weapons and instill confidence in the soldiers. It is believed that the blessings of Maa Durga safeguard the soldiers, ensuring their weapons never fail, whether in operations against Naxalites or during VIP security.
The Gorkha soldiers believe that saluting the Mother with weapons is a symbol of power and valor.
On the day of Mahanavami, 101 goats are sacrificed. Each sacrifice is accompanied by a gun salute, a powerful tribute to the goddess.
The Mahasaptami day witnesses a vibrant procession called ‘Phool Pati’, where branches from nine different trees are gathered and worshipped. The Gorkha soldiers and their families pledge to protect nature and maintain environmental harmony.
On Mahanavami, a special puja is held where the soldiers first offer their weapons to Maa Durga. This is followed by the sacrifice of 101 goats, each accompanied by a gun salute, a testament to their reverence and devotion.
