President Donald Trump will address the 80th high-level session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and also meet with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Trump’s address at the UN General Assembly represents his first address to world leaders at the UNGA during his second term as President.
At a press conference, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that Trump’s speech will be detailed, aiming to reaffirm the United States’ global influence. It will focus on the administration’s achievements during the initial eight months of the President’s second term, including the cessation of seven global wars and conflicts.
Furthermore, President Trump will hold bilateral meetings with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, as well as leaders from Ukraine, Argentina, and the European Union. A multilateral meeting will also occur, involving representatives from Qatar, Pakistan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Turkey, the UAE, and Jordan. This upcoming address will mark Trump’s fifth speech at the UNGA. During his initial term from 2017 to 2021, he also addressed the Assembly.
Additionally, Trump is slated to meet with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy in New York. Reports indicate that during this meeting, Zelenskyy may request that the United States impose more stringent sanctions against Russia. The 80th session of the UN General Assembly commenced on September 9th. The UNGA serves as a forum where 193 member states can discuss international issues, with each nation possessing an equal vote.
