Anticipation for certain films is high, and when Anurag Kashyap is at the helm, that anticipation intensifies. ‘Nishaanchi,’ his latest venture, has been the subject of discussion since its initial announcement. While the film largely fulfills expectations, it also has its drawbacks. Let’s explore the film’s merits and whether it’s worth your time. Does it possess the power to hold your attention? The answer awaits.
The narrative centers on twin brothers, W and B, identical in appearance but with contrasting personalities. W is honest, while B is entangled in various predicaments. The first act is dedicated to understanding these characters and unraveling their complexities. Then, Monika enters as their mother, Manjiri, and Kumud Mishra as Ambika Prasad. Ambika is the source of the family’s troubles, even implicated in their father’s demise.
Ambika uses his influence, and B becomes his right-hand man. Their small town is brimming with stories and secrets, constantly revealing something new. The arrival of Rinku (Vedika Pinto) in their lives changes everything. The question is: will these brothers ever find their way? To find out, you’ll have to see the film in theaters.
Anurag Kashyap’s style is known for its unfiltered authenticity. ‘Nishaanchi’ includes profanity, action, and romance, but something feels amiss. The first half is slow, allowing each character to establish themselves. However, the second half shifts the mood. The film’s strength lies in its dialogues, which are colloquial and humorous. For example, when B tells Ambika, ‘Do you want to play Mughal-e-Azam or Hum Aapke Hain Koun…?’ such punches provide much amusement. However, the film attempts to convey too many ideas at once, which can sometimes feel heavy.
Aishwarya Thackeray shines in his debut. His double role as W and B is commendable. While B’s aggressive character may appeal to many, his portrayal of the straightforward W appears more impactful. Monika delivers a remarkable performance as a mother. Vedika’s role is good, but she doesn’t leave a significant impact. Seasoned actors like Zeeshan Ayyub and Kumud Mishra also make their mark in supporting roles. Although Vineet Singh has limited screen time, his work is, as always, excellent.
The film’s cinematography is impressive. Every scene is beautifully shot. However, the film feels lengthy in certain parts. Vineet Singh’s backstory and some songs seem drawn out. The editing could have been tighter. There’s also a surprise at the end. To find out what that surprise is, you’ll need to watch the movie.
The film boasts many strengths, such as its impactful dialogues that will repeatedly make you laugh and think. The performances are excellent, and Anurag Kashyap’s distinct style is evident, setting it apart. However, the film also has its weaknesses. The story sometimes drags, potentially leading to boredom. Some scenes feel unnecessarily extended, and it seems as though the film attempts to do too much at once, resulting in a somewhat convoluted plot.
Anurag Kashyap has made a comeback to Bollywood, and ‘Nishaanchi’ is proof, despite some shortcomings. A Part 2 is planned, and it’s hoped the team will address these issues. If you’re a fan of cinema and Anurag Kashyap’s work, watch this film. It’s not ‘Gangs of Wasseypur,’ nor does it need to be. It’s a film that will make you laugh, disappoint you at times, but at times, make you say – ‘Wow!’. We rate this film 3 stars.
