The Asia Cup 2025 saw all eight teams begin their tournament journeys following the fifth match. Sri Lanka, competing in Group B, achieved its first victory, setting the stage for an engaging competition. Sri Lanka defeated Bangladesh by six wickets, immediately collecting two points and sparking excitement in their group. Despite this win, Sri Lanka did not claim the top spot in their group.
The Sri Lanka vs. Bangladesh match occurred at Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Zayed Stadium on September 13. Bangladesh had already played a match, winning against Hong Kong. However, the true test was against Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka, through Nuwan Thushara and Dushmantha Chameera’s bowling, restricted Bangladesh to 139 runs. Pathum Nissanka’s rapid half-century allowed Sri Lanka to achieve their target within 15 overs.
The win earned Sri Lanka two points, putting three of the four Group B teams on the board. Afghanistan and Bangladesh also have a win each. Sri Lanka now leads Bangladesh in the standings. However, it is behind Afghanistan due to net run rate (NRR). Afghanistan’s superior NRR (4.700) placed them at the top, while Sri Lanka (2.595) is second. Bangladesh (-0.650) is third after the loss.
Sri Lanka’s upcoming match is against Hong Kong on September 15. Sri Lanka is expected to gain two points and significantly improve their NRR. Any upset by Hong Kong could change the standings, but Sri Lanka is projected to secure the top position.
