Sushila Karki, a former BHU student, has been appointed as Nepal’s interim Prime Minister. She received her political education in Varanasi, where she studied. Karki obtained an MA in Political Science from BHU in 1975. According to Professor Deepak Malik, who has close knowledge of Karki, Varanasi played a significant role in the anti-monarchy movement within Nepal. From the 1940s to the 1980s, BP Koirala spearheaded campaigns against the Nepali monarchy from Varanasi. Key figures like GP Koirala, Shailaja Acharya, and Durga Prasad Subedi, all Nepali Congress youth leaders, were actively involved in the anti-monarchy movement.
