In a recent development concerning the 2015 DRDO data leak case in Balasore, Odisha, which compromised national security, Asif Ali, a suspected terrorist with links to Pakistan’s ISI, was produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) court on Friday. He was brought to Balasore from Meerut Jail under a production warrant.
Asif Ali is alleged to have been involved in supplying arms and ammunition to the ISI, with the intent of fueling terrorist activities. He was apprehended in Meerut in 2015. Ishwar Behera, a cameraman who was employed at the DRDO center in Chandipur, Balasore, was also arrested in connection with this case.
The investigation indicated that Behera had transmitted sensitive information from DRDO to Pakistan. Asif Ali’s role extended beyond conspiracy, actively participating in arms supply and the provision of technical details.
Ishwar Behera has already received a life sentence. The court is currently hearing charges of sedition, criminal conspiracy, and national security breaches against Asif Ali.
Despite filing a bail application during the court proceedings, Asif Ali’s request was denied. Assistant Legal Defense Counsel Rajiv Kumar Pani confirmed that the accused faces serious charges under IPC sections 120(B), 121(A), as well as provisions of the Official Secrets Act.
Security agencies view the case as a significant security concern for India. The DRDO center in Balasore is a key component of India’s defense research, and the leakage of related information represents a grave risk to national security.
During the court appearance, stringent security measures were implemented at the court complex. Police and intelligence agencies maintained a high level of vigilance to prevent any potential incidents. The court has denied bail to Asif Ali as the hearings continue.
