On September 12, 2025, CP Radhakrishnan took the oath of office as India’s 15th Vice President during a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. President Droupadi Murmu presided over the swearing-in at 10:10 am. Radhakrishnan, aged 67, a long-time BJP leader from Tamil Nadu with roots in the RSS, won the vice-presidential election with 452 votes. B Sudershan Reddy, representing the Opposition INDIA bloc and a former Supreme Court judge, received 300 votes. Radhakrishnan’s win was widely expected due to the strong support from the BJP-led NDA, which had 427 MPs, along with backing from the YSR Congress Party and other parties, surpassing the majority threshold. There was speculation of cross-voting in his favor during the election. The election followed the unexpected resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, who stepped down as Vice President on July 21. Following his successful election, Radhakrishnan resigned as Governor of Maharashtra. Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat has been assigned to oversee Maharashtra until a permanent replacement is found. Radhakrishnan, who served as a Member of Parliament from Coimbatore twice and formerly led the BJP in Tamil Nadu, has a distinguished political career, starting with the Jana Sangh and continuing within the BJP.
