Sushila Karki, former Chief Justice, is set to make history as Nepal’s first female Prime Minister, with President Ramchandra Paudel expected to officiate the swearing-in ceremony. Balen Shah, the Mayor of Kathmandu and a potential PM contender, has also voiced his support for Karki. Kulman Ghising, previously associated with the Nepal Electricity Authority, was another individual considered for the interim Prime Minister role. Karki has been a visible presence in Nepal’s anti-government demonstrations for a number of years. During her tenure as Chief Justice, she delivered rulings against corruption in the Nepalese government, earning her considerable recognition among Nepal’s Gen Z. Her appointment as Chief Justice of the Nepal Supreme Court occurred on July 11, 2016; she was the first woman to hold this position. Born in Biratnagar, Nepal, on June 7, 1952, she served in this role for approximately a year before facing an impeachment motion on April 30, 2017, which led to her suspension from the office.
Karki is the eldest of seven children. She graduated with a BA from Mahendra Morang Campus in Biratnagar in 1972. She furthered her education with a Masters in Political Science from Banaras Hindu University in India in 1975. In 1978, she obtained her law degree from Tribhuvan University in Nepal, subsequently commencing her legal practice a year later.
Karki shared her recollections of Banaras Hindu University in a recent interview, recalling her teachers, friends, and the Ganges River. She also conveyed optimistic views on India-Nepal ties, sending her regards to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and expressing a positive opinion of him. She highlighted the strong bonds between the peoples of Nepal and India, pointing out the shared goodwill and affection. Impressed by Indian leaders, she considers them as siblings. Karki, who resides in Biratnagar near the Indian border, also mentioned that she frequently visits the border market. Her statements suggest that her rise to power could be perceived favorably by India.
