With the Asia Cup’s India-Pakistan showdown drawing near, former Indian captain Kapil Dev has appealed for perspective and focus. He believes the cricketing contest should remain central, avoiding distraction from political issues.
“Just go and win. Those whose job is to play should just focus on playing – there’s no need to say anything else,” Kapil advised reporters. “Don’t make this a big issue. The government will do its job, and the players should do theirs.”
Kapil’s comments arrive during a period where cricketing matches between India and Pakistan are often viewed through a political lens. Discussions have reignited concerning the ongoing rivalry, particularly due to the recent Pahalgam attack and its effect on diplomatic relations.
India and Pakistan haven’t played a bilateral series since 2012–13, due to security and political concerns, but they still meet in ICC and ACC tournaments. This year’s Asia Cup, though officially hosted by India, will be held in the United Arab Emirates to manage sensitive issues, with matches in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
The BCCI has re-affirmed that it will comply with the government’s policy, which allows India to participate in multilateral tournaments against Pakistan but not in bilateral series.
India started their title defense strongly, dominating the UAE in the tournament’s opening game. The Indian team dismissed the hosts for a mere 57 runs in just 79 balls. The chase was quick, completed in only 27 balls with nine wickets remaining.
Kapil Dev praised the performance, calling it a display of strong intent. “The team is very good and has secured an impressive victory. We hope they bring the trophy home,” he said.
India are the defending champions, having won the ODI Asia Cup in 2023. This year they bring both momentum and high expectations to a tournament that already has geopolitical implications.
As the cricketing world prepares for the India-Pakistan match, Kapil’s comments highlight the need to separate sport from politics. This sentiment has become more common recently, with players from both sides frequently expressing mutual respect. In a region where cricket is often a source of national pride, Kapil Dev’s remarks are a necessary reminder. The stage is set for an exciting contest, and the hope is that cricket will be the ultimate winner.
