A mother and son have been arrested by the Chhattisgarh police in connection with a gold chain fraud at a jewelry store in Raipur’s Sadar Bazar. The pair allegedly swapped a fake gold bracelet for a real gold chain, resulting in a loss of 1.68 lakh rupees for the jeweler. The individuals involved are Savita Singh (43), also known as Sapna or Sappo, and her son Ishant Verma (23), also known as Anuj. They are from Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh.
The fraudulent exchange took place at Dhadiwal Jewelers, located in the Sadar Bazar area, under the Kotwali police station. On September 9th, the mother and son entered the store and requested repair of a fake gold bracelet. When the jeweler informed them that the bracelet couldn’t be fixed, they asked for a chain in exchange. The jeweler, believing their intentions, provided a 13.880-gram chain worth 1.68 lakh rupees. The pair then left with the chain.
The jeweler later discovered the bracelet was fake and immediately reported the incident to the police. The police registered a case and began an investigation.
The Anti-Crime and Cyber Unit and the Kotwali police team worked together, examining CCTV footage which identified the suspects and their car. The police then apprehended them.
During questioning, the suspects admitted to a previous similar offense at Ajay Jewelers in Bilaspur’s Sadar Bazar, where they traded another fake bracelet for actual gold.
