Nepal is grappling with significant political and social unrest, with demonstrations escalating into violence. The Nepali army assumed control of the nation on Tuesday night. Amidst this turmoil, reports surfaced that former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli fled to Dubai following his resignation. A Nepali air hostess shared a video from the airport, claiming Oli’s departure from Kathmandu. This video’s viral spread has intensified the anger among protesters.
Reports suggest Oli sought the army’s aid in leaving the country, purportedly for medical treatment in Dubai. A Himalaya Airlines jet was reportedly on standby for him, further fueling speculation. The escalating protests saw demonstrators targeting Oli’s residence, the Presidential Palace, and the Supreme Court. The clashes and arson have resulted in 22 deaths and over 400 injuries.
The Nepali army has cautioned against targeting citizens and government assets, warning of strict action against those involved in looting, arson, and vandalism. Other former prime ministers, including Sher Bahadur Deuba, Jhalanath Khanal, and Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda, also became targets. Khanal’s wife tragically died in the fire, while Deuba and Finance Minister Vishnu Paudel faced attacks from protesters.
