Mayawati, the leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party, has criticized the United States for imposing heavy tariffs on Indian goods. Describing the move as ‘Trump Tariff Terror,’ she urged the central government to take decisive steps to manage the fallout from the tariffs. Mayawati believes it is crucial for the BJP government to implement effective reforms in the public’s interest to counter the effects of the tariffs. She cautioned that a failure to do so would worsen existing problems like poverty, unemployment, and inflation, and also damage the country’s global reputation. The BSP leader made these comments at a review meeting in Lucknow. Her statement comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s positive remarks about the India-US partnership, suggesting a desire to mend the strained relations between the two countries. The US has increased tariffs on Indian goods by 50 percent, leading to friction between the two governments. India has called the US action unfair and imprudent. Mayawati’s statement is especially significant given the impact of the tariffs on key export hubs in Uttar Pradesh, where exporters are warning of job losses and reduced market access.
