Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba is set to resign, a move aimed at preventing further internal conflict within Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party. His resignation is expected within a year of his taking office. The impetus for his departure stems from the LDP’s poor performance in the July parliamentary elections. The outcome of these elections intensified demands for his resignation. Ishiba has yet to announce when he will officially step down.
Ishiba became Prime Minister in October of the previous year. He has been contending with demands from right-wing opponents within his own party for the past month. The LDP-led coalition did not achieve a majority in the upper house, which has 248 seats, during the July parliamentary elections.
