When discussing horror films, the ‘Conjuring’ series immediately comes to mind. The franchise has set a new standard for horror films, and features a total of nine films, each being exceptional. The first film in the series was released in 2013. The subtle thrill and jump scares in this film were enough to scare even the bravest. A key reason for the popularity of these films is the story’s connection to Ed and Lorraine Warren.
Whether you’ve seen The Conjuring or not, you’ve likely heard their names. The haunted stories of this couple are enough to keep you awake at night. Few people know that there are approximately nine films in the Conjuring universe, and they are all connected in some way. Now, the final film of this franchise has been released, and is being called the final part of The Conjuring. Is this film actually one of the best films in the franchise? Let’s find out.
The film is titled ‘Conjuring: The Last Rites’. The film revolves around the final case of Ed and Lorraine Warren, which is related to the Smurls family. Ed and Lorraine are aging and live happily with their daughter, Judy. They have taken a break from their work and wish to focus entirely on their daughter. Judy has some powers, similar to her parents, which sets her apart from others.
A twist in the story comes when terrifying events begin to occur in a family far from the Warrens. When Ed and Lorraine arrive, they discover that the evil spirit has a deep connection to their old case. You will only learn the nature of this relationship by watching the film. There is less haunting and more emotion this time around. The trailer showcased a glimpse of the Annabelle doll, but if you are expecting a confrontation with Annabelle or Vallak Nun, you’ll be disappointed.
Is it the best film in the universe? The answer is no. The film’s background music won’t let you leave your seat, but the jump scares aren’t something you haven’t seen before. They will surprise you, but it will be difficult to scare you completely. However, for those who aren’t overly fond of horror and haven’t seen much, this film won’t take long to turn into your worst nightmare. The acting performances by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, who play Ed and Lorraine, are outstanding, as always. Mia Tomlinson has also done a great job.
A hallmark of the Conjuring universe is the depth of its stories. There is so much silence in these films that it starts to bother your ears, but this film seems to be missing that element a little. However, it has nothing to do with the connection; you will still get a good experience from this film. Enjoy the film with your family, but keep small children away; the film has been rated R.
