The Duleep Trophy 2025 saw the absence of Shubman Gill, India’s newly designated Test skipper and T20 vice-captain, who was slated to lead in the match against East Zone. Ankit Kumar stepped in as captain in his stead. The reason for Gill’s withdrawal was later disclosed to be the flu, which kept him in Chandigarh for several days. He was advised to rest and recuperate, ruling him out of the quarterfinal match. His absence was particularly felt by North Zone, given Gill’s pivotal role in the team’s performance. Gill has since regained his fitness and is undergoing light training at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. He is preparing to join the Asia Cup 2025 squad in Dubai, where he is expected to be among the early arrivals. The Indian squad for the Asia Cup, which starts September 9, has named Gill as vice-captain, replacing Axar Patel.
