Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, disclosed that Donald Trump was both unhappy and unsurprised by the recent Russian air strikes on Ukraine. Leavitt indicated that Trump hopes for a swift conclusion to the war and believes both Putin and Zelensky share this desire. The attacks, which resulted in significant casualties, were among the most extensive since the conflict began. Further announcements from the former President are expected. The developments come during ongoing diplomatic efforts by the United States and Russia to negotiate an end to the war, including truce discussions held in Alaska. Russia deployed a range of advanced weaponry, including hypersonic missiles, targeting military installations. The strikes reportedly damaged weapons factories and airfields. The Ukrainian military reported it intercepted the majority of the incoming missiles but acknowledged that Russian strikes were successful in 13 locations, with more damage being done by debris. A video circulating online showed missiles hitting the same target area in Kyiv, which was identified as the office of the defense company Ukrspecsystems. In addition, a plant in Kyiv operated by the Turkish military firm Bayraktar was also attacked. Earlier, Russia’s Federal Security Service stated it had targeted Ukraine’s Sapsan ballistic missile program, claiming considerable damage. Moscow has consistently accused Western nations of using Ukraine as a proxy and argues the war’s objectives are not aligned with Ukrainian interests.
