Jammu and Kashmir is grappling with a crisis due to heavy rainfall. A devastating landslide occurred on Wednesday along the path leading to Mata Vaishno Devi Dham in the Reasi district. The incident has claimed the lives of at least 31 people, with 23 others injured. Rescue operations are underway as authorities work to locate any individuals who may still be buried under the debris.
The Jammu-Katra highway is completely blocked following the landslide, causing significant disruption to travel. Northern Railway has responded by canceling 22 trains and implementing short-terminations for 27 others. Among the affected services are 9 trains that depart from the Vaishno Devi base camp.
The persistent rain has heightened the threat of flooding and additional landslides. The region from Jammu city to Kathua, Udhampur, Samba, and Reasi has experienced widespread devastation. Critical infrastructure, including bridges, mobile towers, and power lines, has been compromised.
A coordinated effort involving the administration, the army, the NDRF, and the SDRF is focused on providing relief. Over 3,500 individuals have been safely evacuated. Temporary camps are providing essential supplies, including food, water, and medical care, to those affected by the disaster.
Weather forecasts predict a continuation of adverse conditions. The meteorological department has reported that clouds are reaching 12 km in height, signaling the potential for more severe storms and rainfall in the upcoming days.
