Relations between India and the United States are strained. The US has imposed a 50% tariff on Indian goods. White House advisor Peter Navarro stated that the ongoing conflict in Ukraine is related to Indian policies. He referred to the war as “Modi’s war” due to India’s continued purchase of Russian oil.
Navarro believes that India’s actions are supporting Russia’s aggression, thus burdening American taxpayers. He suggested that if India were to stop buying Russian oil, it could see a reduction in US tariffs.
In an interview, Navarro indicated that a path to peace “somewhat passes through New Delhi.” He explained that the current tariffs are linked to India’s oil purchases from Russia.
Navarro stated that reducing these tariffs is straightforward: stop buying Russian oil. He expressed disappointment at India’s stance on tariffs and argued that India is being arrogant in its approach.
Navarro accused India of aiding Moscow’s war efforts. He said that by buying Russian oil at a discount, India helps fund Russia’s military actions. He argued that these actions negatively impact the American economy, costing jobs and affecting various sectors. He emphasized that India’s trade practices, specifically the purchase of Russian oil, ultimately require American taxpayers to provide more military aid to Ukraine, calling the situation “madness.”
