A shooting incident unfolded at a school in Minneapolis, USA, on Wednesday morning. The gunfire, perpetrated by a lone shooter, resulted in the deaths of two young children. A further 17 individuals sustained injuries. Law enforcement sources indicated that the assailant subsequently took their own life. The two children who lost their lives were aged 8 and 10 years old.
The attack occurred at Annunciation Church, which also serves as a location for a grammar school. A hospital official confirmed that out of the 17 individuals wounded, 14 were children, and seven were in serious condition.
According to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara, the shooter, estimated to be approximately 20 years old, was armed with a rifle, a shotgun, and a pistol. The police also noted that the suspect did not have a significant criminal record. During a press briefing, the police chief explained that the shooter approached the school near the church during Mass and initiated gunfire through the church windows using a rifle. He stated that the shots were directed at children who were participating in prayer. The suspect also fired upon children and worshippers within the building.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump shared on Truth Social that he had been informed of the “tragic shooting.” He added that the White House was closely monitoring the situation. Trump posted, “The White House will keep a close watch on this horrific situation. Please join me in praying for all involved!” Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey also attended the press conference. The mayor emphasized that children should be able to play in playgrounds, and attend schools and churches peacefully, free from the fear and risks of violence.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz also commented on social media that he had been informed of the shooting incident, adding that he was praying for the children and educators whose school week had been disrupted by the tragic event.
FBI Director Kash Patel stated that the agency’s agents were on the scene. Patel wrote on X, “We are aware of reports of a shooting at a Catholic school in Minnesota. FBI agents are on the scene, and we ask everyone to keep potential victims, civilians or law enforcement in harms way in your prayers. The FBI will provide updates as more information becomes available.”
