A demonstration outside the Bangladesh Consulate in New York saw supporters of Sheikh Hasina engaging in a violent protest. Mahfuz Alam, an advisor in the Yunus government, was attacked with eggs and stones by the protestors. The consulate premises also suffered damage.
Mahfuz Alam was moved to safety amidst the unrest caused by Awami League activists. His visit to New York was to attend an event related to the anniversary of the coup in Bangladesh. The attack on Alam is linked to a recent government decision involving Sheikh Hasina.
The Bangladesh government has prohibited the transmission of any messages from Sheikh Hasina. Media outlets publishing or printing her messages are also subject to action. Mahfuz Alam holds the position of head of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in the Yunus government.
According to reports, as Mahfuz Alam arrived at the consulate for an event, Awami League supporters entered the building with slogans. They chanted ‘Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu.’ Initially, they opposed Mahfuz’s presence, which then escalated into a disturbance.
When attempts were made to remove them, the activists caused further chaos, pelting Mahfuz with stones and eggs, and then vandalizing the consulate.
The organizers sought help from the American police to manage the situation. Mahfuz Alam was eventually rescued from the consulate and taken to a secure hotel. He is in the United States until August 27.
With the general elections approaching, the Awami League, Sheikh Hasina’s party, has intensified its activities. Recent protests were held in Dhaka and surrounding areas by Awami League workers. They are also active in Britain.
The demonstration in New York is a show of their increased involvement. General elections are scheduled for February 2026. The Election Commission has confirmed that Sheikh Hasina’s party is eligible to participate.
