A distressing incident unfolded in Kolabani village, located within the Punnasa Tola area of Laylam Panchayat in the Bodaam block of Purvi Singhbhum district. On Sunday morning, a raw dwelling belonging to a disadvantaged tribal family suddenly crumbled. Fortunately, the occupants managed to escape before the structure completely gave way, preventing potential casualties. Nevertheless, the family is now without a home and faces significant hardship.
The event occurred around 9 a.m. on Sunday. Vijay Hansda’s family’s rudimentary tiled home succumbed to the force of heavy rainfall. Constructed from mud and tiles, the house had been weakened by the persistent rain. Although family members were present inside when the collapse began, they swiftly evacuated upon hearing the initial signs of the structure’s failure. Within moments, the walls and roof had completely collapsed.
According to Vijay Hansda, the family’s bullocks were trapped under the rubble. Villagers, alerted to the situation, promptly arrived at the scene and, after considerable effort, successfully rescued the animals. However, essential belongings, including food supplies, clothing, and utensils, were buried beneath the debris.
Vijay Hansda laments that the house represented their entire life savings, now reduced to ruins. The family is now displaced, with no shelter. They are compelled to live exposed to the elements.
The affected family has urgently appealed to the authorities for immediate relief and financial assistance. Local villagers have also urged the district administration to offer support and resettlement options to the family, enabling them to rebuild their lives.
