The BCCI has initiated the Bronco test to improve the fitness levels of the Indian cricket team. The test is being implemented at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (COE). In this test, players are required to complete a specific race within a 6-minute timeframe. This test is especially aimed at fast bowlers. Former Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has raised questions about the test. He has expressed concerns about who would be accountable if a player sustains an injury during the test, asserting that the test could potentially lead to injuries among the players.
Ashwin discussed on his YouTube channel, ‘Ash Ki Baat,’ that changes in testing methods often accompany changes in the team’s trainers. He believes that these constant alterations in training methodologies pose significant challenges for the players, potentially leading to injuries. He referenced his experiences from 2017 to 2019 during Soham Desai’s time. He suggested that there’s no requirement to change the existing processes when things are operating effectively within the team. Adrian Le Roux replaced Soham Desai as the Strength and Conditioning Coach, and he proposed the Bronco test, which received approval from Head Coach Gautam Gambhir.
The Bronco test is designed to enhance the fitness of the Indian team. The test necessitates that cricketers, particularly fast bowlers, complete a designated running course within 6 minutes. The test involves players starting with a 20-meter shuttle run, followed by 40-meter and 60-meter runs. These runs combine to form a set. Each cricketer is anticipated to complete five sets (equivalent to 1200 meters) without interruption. This test is also employed in rugby and football.
The introduction of the Bronco test stems from the fitness issues faced by India’s fast bowlers during the England tour. Mohammed Siraj was the only bowler to participate in all five Test matches, while Jasprit Bumrah featured in just three. The Bronco test complements the existing Yo-Yo test. Reports suggest that some players have already undertaken the Bronco test at the COE in Bengaluru.
