In a move to improve the physical conditioning of the Indian cricket team, the BCCI is incorporating the Bronco Test into its fitness program. This new assessment, developed by strength and conditioning coach Adrian le Roux and endorsed by head coach Gautam Gambhir, will be used alongside the established Yo-Yo test and two-kilometer time trial. The change is prompted by observations of varying fitness levels among Indian players during the recent Test series in England. The Bronco Test, a staple in rugby, evaluates a player’s endurance through a series of shuttle runs. The test requires players to run 20, 40, and 60-meter shuttles, completing five sets without a break, which equates to a total distance of 1,200 meters. The objective for Indian cricketers is to complete the test within six minutes. Early trials of the Bronco Test have taken place at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence, highlighting the need for improved running performance among the players, particularly fast bowlers. The introduction of this test reflects the need to ensure the team maintains peak fitness levels, essential for succeeding in the demanding formats of modern cricket.
