A dispute between two factions in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, on Friday night escalated into a violent clash. Both groups engaged in stone-pelting, with vehicles also targeted in the unrest. Police responded quickly to gain control. Following the incident, a significant police presence was established throughout the area, with four police officers suffering injuries.
In Siddharthnagar, a crowd set fire to a tempo and a car, while also vandalizing numerous other vehicles. The initial source of tension appeared to be over the removal of a stage set up near the Siddharthnagar command for the anniversary celebrations of the Rajebagswar Football Club, leading to heavy stone-pelting between the groups.
The police have since brought the situation under control; however, a sense of unease persisted late into the night. Police and the State Reserve Police Force have been deployed in every area of Siddharthnagar.
SP Yogesh Kumar confirmed that a clash occurred between members of two communities, which was a result of a misunderstanding. The communities have been separated, with the situation now stabilized, and further action is underway. Kumar emphasized that the tension originated during a community event. He appealed to both communities to disregard any misleading or fabricated messages.
Authorities are currently identifying the individuals involved in the disturbances from the previous night, utilizing CCTV footage and witness statements to take appropriate action against those responsible.
Following the incident, the police have requested the public to disregard rumors and to avoid the dissemination of inflammatory content on social media. The local administration has increased the number of police personnel stationed in the area.
