Indian cricket is in a phase of significant change, with new faces and a youthful coaching setup. Retirements of key players have created openings for new talent, prompting a leadership restructuring across all formats. While much of the early year was focused on finding a long-term Test captain, the focus has now moved to the future of India’s ODI leadership. Discussions have begun on who will take over as ODI captain, with Rohit Sharma’s potential retirement from ODIs in the headlines. Shreyas Iyer, who has led different IPL teams to consecutive finals, is one name in consideration. However, Devajit Saikia, the BCCI secretary, has denied any discussions regarding replacing Rohit Sharma. Instead, Shubman Gill is the leading candidate for India’s ODI captaincy and the board’s preferred choice. According to a source, Gill is also the choice for ODI captaincy, mirroring his recent Test captaincy appointment. The source further added that, with an ODI average of 59 and his current vice-captaincy, Gill is the logical choice to lead the ODI team when the opportunity arises.
