In Pakistan, the political landscape is shifting with the increasing prominence of General Asim Munir. Munir’s recent appointment as Field Marshal by the Shehbaz government has fueled rumors that he may be eyeing the presidency, potentially jeopardizing the position of current President Asif Ali Zardari.
Zardari has responded by appointing Murtaza Solangi, a veteran journalist and former interim information minister, as his spokesperson. This move is interpreted as a sign that Zardari is concerned about losing his position and is seeking to consolidate his power.
Solangi announced his new role on X, stating, “A small personal news, I have been appointed as the spokesperson to the President of Pakistan. I will assume my new responsibilities from tomorrow. Thank you.”
Historically, several Pakistani army chiefs have overthrown governments. However, the current Shehbaz government appears to be attempting a more nuanced approach, possibly offering Asim Munir the presidency to safeguard the Prime Minister’s office.
The Shehbaz Sharif administration has taken various steps, from elevating Asim Munir to Field Marshal to facilitating his meeting with Trump in the United States. Asim Munir’s growing influence within Pakistan is a clear cause for concern for Asif Ali Zardari.
Zardari’s selection of a spokesperson aims to strengthen his connection with the public and enhance his ability to communicate during crises. Solangi previously oversaw over 3,000 employees within 64 broadcasting units at Radio Pakistan (2008-2013). He played a crucial role in establishing relationships with international broadcasters such as Voice of America, China Radio International, and Deutsche Welle.
Solangi also made history by becoming the first Pakistani to be elected as the Vice President and later the Acting President of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union. In 2011, he was awarded the Sitara-e-Imtiaz by the President of Pakistan for his contributions to media and public service.
