On August 17th, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate two major road projects in Haryana, promising significant improvements in the Delhi-NCR region’s transport infrastructure. These include the Dwarka Expressway and the Urban Extension Road-2 (UER-2). The Dwarka Expressway, a groundbreaking 8-lane elevated urban expressway, will connect Gurugram to the Delhi Airport. The implementation of these projects will provide substantial relief to commuters by easing traffic congestion.
These projects, with an estimated cost of ₹11,000 crore, are designed to significantly reduce traffic bottlenecks in Delhi NCR and Gurugram, thereby easing freight movement. The Dwarka Expressway, spanning from Gurugram to the Delhi Airport, will transform the commute for Delhi residents. The journey to Gurugram will be reduced to around 20 minutes, a stark contrast to the previous hour-long commutes often marred by delays. This expressway features a 3.6 km tunnel, the widest in the country.
The Dwarka Expressway will primarily benefit residents of Gurugram, Dwarka, Vasant Kunj, and adjacent areas. It will also reduce travel durations for those traveling to and from cities like Faridabad, Manesar, Sonipat, Panipat, and Chandigarh. The project is expected to ease traffic on the Gurugram road originating from Dhaula Kuan by 50 percent.
Spanning a total of 29 kilometers, the urban elevated Dwarka Expressway comprises 18.9 km in Haryana and 10.1 km in Delhi. It begins at Shiv Murti in Mahipalpur, Delhi, and concludes at the Kherki Daula toll plaza in Gurugram.
Residents of outer and rural areas, including Bawana, Narela, Mundka, Rohini, Samaypur Badli, Kanjhawala, and Kirari, will be significant beneficiaries of the Dwarka Expressway project, experiencing reduced travel times across Delhi. Moreover, access to DDA flats in Narela and Bawana will be simplified.
Alongside the Dwarka Expressway, the Urban Extension Road-2 (UER-2) is also set for inauguration. This 75.81 km long road features several elevated sections designed to reduce traffic congestion in Delhi, Gurugram, Sonipat, and surrounding areas. This will lead to reduced traffic at Mundka, Bakkarwala, Najafgarh, Dhaula Kuan, and Mubaraka Chowk.
UER-2 will commence at the Delhi-Chandigarh highway in Alipur, Delhi, and will navigate through Mundka, Bakkarwala, Najafgarh, and Dwarka, culminating near Mahipalpur on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway. Planned as Delhi’s third ring road, this project is valued at approximately ₹6,445 crore.
UER-II will link with the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway near Akshardham Temple, offering convenient access to those heading to Dehradun from Haryana and Rajasthan. This infrastructure will streamline travel from Noida to the IGI Airport and reduce congestion on Delhi’s Ring Road, NH-48, NH-44, and the Barapulla Elevated Corridor.
The Dwarka Expressway in Delhi will not only improve local transport but also integrate rail, metro, and bus services through multi-modal connectivity. The UER-II will play a key role in easing traffic in Delhi’s congested areas, allowing people to meet flight and train schedules and eliminating the stress of traffic delays.
