On August 17, Rahul Gandhi, a prominent Congress MP and the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, will launch the ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ from Sasaram, Bihar. The central objective of this yatra is to protest against suspected discrepancies in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list, along with the claims of “vote theft.” The campaign will see Gandhi cover a distance of 1300 kilometers within the state. The journey will begin in Sasaram and culminate in Patna, unfolding over a period of 17 days. According to party sources, this ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ constitutes a direct confrontation against electoral fraud, specifically targeting those who are perceived to be gaining power through illicit means. Earlier, on August 14, Gandhi announced the commencement of the Voter Adhikar Yatra, addressing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. He appealed to the public to actively participate in this initiative. In a message shared on social media, Gandhi characterized the campaign as a direct challenge to vote manipulation in Bihar. He emphasized that this is a crucial fight to protect democratic values, the constitution, and the fundamental principle of “one man, one vote.” He further pledged to ensure the integrity of voter lists across the nation, inviting participation from various segments of society. Furthermore, a satirical video inspired by the film Laapataa Ladies was shared by Gandhi, amplifying the Congress’s accusations against the Election Commission regarding “vote theft” and encouraging support for the ‘Vote Chori se Azaadi’ movement. In the video, a man is depicted reporting the theft of his vote at a police station. Gandhi had previously voiced criticism of the Election Commission of India, labeling the elections as “choreographed.” He cited research from the Mahadevapura Assembly constituency in Karnataka to support claims of widespread voter irregularities. The Election Commission has requested a signed statement from Gandhi to validate these allegations.
