The sanctity of marriage, often built on love, trust, and respect, was tested in a peculiar incident in Gumla, Jharkhand, where a husband orchestrated his wife’s marriage to her lover. Rinku Sahu, residing in the Sisai block, made the decision to unite his wife, Urmila Kumari, with her boyfriend after catching her trying to leave their home under the cover of darkness. Prior to the event, Rinku was aware of the affair and had tried to reconcile with Urmila, keeping in mind their three-year-old daughter, but his efforts were in vain.
Urmila’s secret attempt to leave the house was foiled when Rinku saw her. He raised an alarm, summoning the village. He then proceeded to have his wife marry her lover in front of the assembled villagers, and then bid them farewell.
Rinku and Urmila’s marriage had taken place around five years ago, and they had a daughter. Their married life was disrupted by the arrival of Avinash Kumar, a resident of Gaya district, Bihar. Avinash, employed as a driver, and Urmila developed a close relationship, meeting secretly. When Rinku became aware of his wife’s increasing closeness with Avinash, he was heartbroken.
Despite Rinku’s attempts to reason with her, Urmila was determined to stay with her lover. The situation became the talk of the neighborhood. Urmila’s parents also tried to convince her to save her marriage, but she remained steadfast. In a desperate move, Urmila planned to elope with Avinash, taking valuable jewelry and cash. However, her escape was thwarted when Rinku caught her in the act.
On Tuesday, as she was attempting to leave, Rinku saw her and alerted the villagers. A village council was formed where Rinku, expressing his anger over his wife’s betrayal, announced the end of their relationship. He then arranged for the lover to apply sindoor to Urmila’s forehead, formalizing their marriage, and sent them away. The event has generated a lot of discussion in the region.
