India and the United States are experiencing heightened tensions following President Donald Trump’s decision to impose a 50 percent tariff on Indian goods. This move is expected to affect Indian businesses. In the midst of these trade disputes, a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Trump could occur next month.
It is possible that PM Modi will travel to the US to speak at the United Nations General Assembly. He is scheduled to address the assembly on September 26, as per the UNGA speaker list. However, this remains a preliminary plan.
PM to Attend UNGA
The 80th session of the UNGA is set to begin on September 9. PM Modi’s potential visit to the US is linked to his participation in this assembly. The high-level general debate will run from September 23 to 29, with Brazil traditionally speaking first, followed by the United States. President Trump is slated to address the General Assembly on September 23. On September 26, alongside India, leaders from Israel, China, Pakistan, and Bangladesh are also scheduled to address the UN General Assembly.
Possibility of a Modi-Trump Meeting
The United States first imposed a 25 percent tariff on India. Following this, an additional 25 percent tariff was announced due to India’s oil trade with Russia, bringing the total tariff to 50 percent. This has resulted in strained relations between the two countries. Given the current tensions, it is believed that the PM’s visit could provide an opportunity for a meeting with President Trump. Several diplomatic analysts believe a face-to-face meeting between Modi and Trump could help stabilize the relationship.
Previously, PM Modi visited the US in February. During this visit, he held bilateral talks with President Trump. A joint statement following their meeting indicated plans to negotiate the initial phase of a mutually advantageous, multi-sector bilateral trade agreement by 2025.
India’s Stance on Tariffs
In response to the US tariffs, India’s Ministry of External Affairs stated that targeting India is unwarranted. The ministry affirmed that, like any major economy, India will take all necessary steps to protect its national interests and economic security.
