The Indian government is moving forward with efforts to include Chhath Puja in the UNESCO list, building upon the Chhathi Maiya Foundation’s historic efforts. This festival, representing India’s faith, environmental consciousness, and cultural heritage, is now on its path to international recognition. The Indian government, accepting the initial official demand from the Chhathi Maiya Foundation, has instructed the Sangeet Natak Akademi (SNA) to initiate the process of adding Chhath Puja to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list. A formal order was issued by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, through letter F.No.U-11/134/2018-UNESCO, dated August 8, 2025. The Union Minister of Culture and Tourism, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, has provided important guidance and support for this historic move.
