The Indian and Sri Lankan Coast Guards convened for their 8th high-level meeting in New Delhi on Monday, addressing the escalating security concerns and shifting geopolitical landscape of the Indian Ocean. The discussions centered on fortifying maritime collaboration and promoting regional stability.
Rear Admiral Y.R. Serasinghe represented the Sri Lankan side, while Paramash Shivamani, Director General of the Indian Coast Guard, led the Indian delegation. The Sri Lankan representatives are engaged in meetings and professional activities in India from August 10th to 14th, aligning with the collaborative framework established in 2018.
Key topics of discussion included combating marine pollution, conducting search and rescue missions, enforcing maritime law, and providing training and technical support. A significant focus was placed on countering maritime threats such as piracy, illegal fishing, and the smuggling of arms and illicit substances within the Indian Ocean.
The meeting underscores the strategic importance of the India-Sri Lanka partnership in the face of China’s expanding influence and evolving maritime security risks in the Indian Ocean. Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to jointly safeguarding maritime security and environmental preservation.
