Speculation is rife that Ravichandran Ashwin could be departing from the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). While no official announcements have been made, indications from within the CSK camp point towards a possible exit for the celebrated Indian match-winner, particularly in red-ball cricket.
The reasons behind this potential parting are still unclear. However, it is understood that the experienced off-spinner has made up his mind, and his decision may have been conveyed to the CSK management. The link to CSK’s future planning is uncertain, though top officials and players, including current captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and former captain MS Dhoni, have been engaged in discussions in Chennai in recent days. The agenda is likely to revolve around the impending season.
With the IPL trade window currently open, the situation has created intense discussions regarding the perfect time for a move. The possibility of Ashwin being traded to another team or entering the auction is a significant topic of discussion. An important clue about the potential separation is Ashwin’s expected resignation as Director of Operations at the CSK Academy. Should he move to another franchise, the role could create a conflict of interest, something Ashwin wants to avoid.
Ashwin has an impressive IPL record with 221 matches played, 187 wickets at an economy rate of 7.29, and 833 runs at a strike rate of 118. He played nine games for CSK in the 2025 season. He rejoined Chennai last season after nine years, costing CSK Rs 9.75 crore. Before rejoining CSK, he played for Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, and Rajasthan Royals between 2016 and 2024. His IPL career started with CSK in 2008, with his debut the following year. He played under MS Dhoni’s leadership during his first eight seasons (2008–2015). This news comes after reports of Sanju Samson asking Rajasthan Royals to release him, suggesting a potential reshuffle in the IPL player market.
