A fierce encounter between security forces and terrorists in Kulgam, Jammu and Kashmir, continues into its ninth day. The prolonged operation has resulted in the martyrdom of two soldiers. During a gun battle that extended through Friday night, four security personnel sustained injuries, with two ultimately making the ultimate sacrifice. Authorities have described this as one of the most extended counter-terrorism operations in the region over the past ten years.
Since the commencement of ‘Operation Akhal’ in Kulgam, a total of 11 security personnel have been injured. The operation is still ongoing, according to officials.
The Chinar Corps of the Indian Army took to social media to pay tribute to the soldiers who lost their lives during the Kulgam operation. They honored the valor of Lieutenant Colonel Pritpal Singh and Sepoy Harminder Singh, whose sacrifice was for the nation. The Corps highlighted that their courage and dedication would serve as a constant source of inspiration. They also confirmed the ongoing nature of the operation.
The ‘Operation Akhal’ was launched on August 1st. Three terrorists have been killed in the ongoing firefight. The operation began after security forces received intelligence regarding the presence of terrorists in a forest in Akhal, in the South Kashmir district. Following an initial exchange of gunfire on Friday, the operation was paused for the night. The security cordon was subsequently reinforced, and additional troops were brought in.
When the fighting resumed the following day, two terrorists were neutralized. The identities and affiliations of these terrorists are yet to be ascertained.
Security forces have created a secure perimeter around the area and are engaged in continuous combat with the terrorists who are believed to be concealed in the dense forests. Senior police and military officials, including J&K Police Chief Nalin Prabhat and the Northern Commander, Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, are actively overseeing the operation around the clock.
Drones and helicopters are being deployed by the security forces to identify the terrorists within the forest. Para commandos are also assisting the security forces in neutralizing the hidden terrorists. The terrorists are believed to be located in the higher reaches of the mountains, allowing them to monitor the movements of the security forces and frequently change their positions, making it challenging to reach them.
