Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has appointed Ali Larijani as the head of the National Security Council following recent conflicts. This move signifies significant changes within the Iranian government. Larijani, a known adversary of President Masoud Pezeshkian, will take on this crucial role. He replaces Ali-Akbar Ahmadian, who was associated with the IRGC and held the position since May 2023. The appointment is seen by many as a shift towards a more moderate approach in Iran’s leadership.
Larijani’s background includes a strong connection to the government, a PhD in philosophy, and previous service in the IRGC. He has held various senior government positions over three decades and was appointed as one of Khamenei’s advisors in May 2020.
