A violent confrontation at Srinagar airport on July 26, 2025, has led to an army officer being charged with ‘murderous assault’ after four SpiceJet employees were injured. The incident began when the officer was informed that his carry-on bag was over the 7 kg limit, during flight SG-386 at the boarding gate.
The officer reacted aggressively to the information, physically attacking the airline’s staff. He repeatedly punched and kicked the employees, and continued his assault even after one employee lost consciousness. Several staff members sustained serious injuries, including spinal and jaw injuries.
The officer was carrying two pieces of cabin baggage totaling 16 kg, exceeding the permitted 7 kg limit. Refusing to pay the applicable charges, he attempted to enter the aerobridge without completing the boarding process, violating aviation security protocols. He was escorted back to the gate by a CISF official. At the gate, he assaulted four members of the SpiceJet ground staff.
Following the incident, an FIR was filed with the local police, and SpiceJet is taking steps to add the officer to the no-fly list, in accordance with civil aviation regulations. SpiceJet has also informed the Ministry of Civil Aviation about the incident, requesting appropriate action and has provided the police with CCTV footage of the assault.
