Donald Trump commented on reports suggesting India is ending its oil purchases from Russia, labeling the move as a positive development. This follows the US’s decision to impose a 25% tariff on Indian imports, targeting crude oil and military equipment obtained from Russia. Trump mentioned that he was considering additional measures against India.
Speaking with ANI, Trump said he understood that India would no longer buy oil from Russia and described it as ‘a good step’. This statement was made in response to questions about potential penalties and a possible discussion with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had previously stated that energy purchases are guided by national interests and market conditions, and they were not aware of any specific changes in import practices. This came after criticism from US officials like Trump and Marco Rubio regarding India’s continued import of discounted Russian oil, despite existing Western sanctions. Trump had earlier criticized India’s trade relations with Russia.
