Chhattisgarh’s Long Jump in Urban Sanitation, 115 out of 169 Cities Improve Their Rankings in Sanitation Survey
25 cities of Chhattisgarh in the top-100 nationally among 4,566 cities across the country included in the survey
62 cities in the state improve their status in the Garbage-Free City Star rating, Raipur receives Seven Star honor
The number of cities receiving single, three and five star status reached 114, it was 71 in the previous survey
Three municipal corporations reached Water Plus category from ODF Plus Plus, 163 bodies received ODF Plus Plus status
Raipur, July 29, 2025/ In the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 of the Government of India, Chhattisgarh has once again made a strong presence at the national level. The excellent performance of the urban bodies of the state has resulted in 115 out of 169 cities included in the survey this time improving their rankings significantly. In this national assessment of cleanliness, 25 cities of Chhattisgarh have been included in the top-100 among 4,566 cities across the country, which is a big jump compared to the previous year, when only 16 cities could make it to the top-100.
62 urban bodies of the state have improved their status in the Garbage-Free City Star rating, while the number of cities receiving single, three and five stars has increased from 71 to 114. Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh, has this time received the highest rating of Seven Stars, up from Five Stars. Raipur has received this honor in the Garbage-Free City category, and it has also been given the status of Water Plus city in cleanliness.
This time, Bilaspur, Korba and Bhilai Nagar—these three municipal corporations have reached the Water Plus category from ODF Plus Plus. 163 urban bodies of the state have received the ODF Plus Plus status, which also includes bodies like Kirandul and Bhatapara Municipalities and Kunra Nagar Panchayat, which were earlier only in the ODF category. Sitapur Nagar Panchayat has also achieved ODF Plus Plus status by going ahead from ODF Plus.
In the last one and a half years, 62 urban bodies have improved in the Garbage-Free City Star rating through their continuous efforts. Bilaspur and Ambikapur have upgraded their three star level to five stars, while Bhilai Nagar, Jagdalpur Municipal Corporation, Jamul Municipality and Gharghoda Nagar Panchayat have now received three stars, moving ahead from the single star status of 2023-24. At the same time, cities like Dhamtari, Shivrinarayan and Rajpur, which were not in the star rating in the previous survey, have directly entered the three star category. Due to special efforts in the field of cleanliness and beautification, 52 urban bodies of the state have now received single star status by being upgraded from no star.
This time, a major improvement has been seen in the national ranking of many urban bodies. Simga, which was at 649th position at the national level in the year 2023-24, has secured the 95th rank this time. Similarly, Jashpur has moved from 637th to 91st, Rajpur from 630th to 63rd and Gharghoda from 616th to 71st. Bhilai-Charoda has improved its ranking from 587 to 68, Dornapal from 557 to 81, Dantewada from 552 to 70, Jagdalpur from 461 to 55, Mungeli from 447 to 86, Kawardha from 430 to 77, Kunkuri from 426 to 84, Durg from 314 to 80, Rajnandgaon from 268 to 46, Bhilai Nagar from 267 to 22, Chhura from 230 to 76, Pratapur from 173 to 62, Balrampur from 65 to 53 and Raipur has moved from the 12th rank to the fourth position.
Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai has attributed this achievement of the cities of the state to the collective efforts of the local bodies and citizens. He said that the urban government, the state government and the central government are continuously striving to make the cities clean and beautiful with innovations. He expressed confidence that the ranking of the cities of Chhattisgarh will improve further in the coming time and this time’s national success will inspire all the urban bodies even more.
Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Urban Administration and Development Shri Arun Sao, while appreciating the excellent performance of the urban bodies in the survey, said that an amount of Rs 7,400 crore was released by the state government for urban development and cleanliness in the financial year 2024-25, the positive result of which is being seen. He informed that the department had directed the commissioners of all the municipal corporations and the chief municipal officers of the municipalities and nagar panchayats to regularly monitor the cleanliness work by visiting with their subordinate staff every morning. Shri Sao said that both these initiatives of the department have played an important role in this achievement.
