In the lead-up to the Bihar assembly elections, the Nitish Kumar government has announced the establishment of a sanitation workers commission. This move comes after a series of announcements, including increased pensions for journalists. The Chief Minister has directed the formation of the Bihar State Sanitation Workers Commission to address the rights and welfare of sanitation workers. The commission will be responsible for protecting their interests, providing suggestions, and overseeing welfare schemes. The commission will comprise a chairman, a vice-chairman, and five members, one of whom will be a woman or a transgender individual. The commission aims to integrate sanitation workers from marginalized sections of society into the mainstream and aid their social and economic development. Earlier announcements included a hike in pension for journalists and a promise of free electricity for up to 125 units for all domestic consumers from August 1, 2025, impacting 1.67 crore families.
