Google’s URL Shortener service, goo.gl, is set to be retired. Users will no longer be able to utilize the service after August 25, 2025. The search giant announced that the service will be discontinued, meaning that any goo.gl links will fail to work after this date and display a 404 error, indicating the resource cannot be found.
Google cited a decline in the use of Google URL Shortener over recent years as the reason for the shutdown. They revealed that in June 2024, 99% of the links experienced no activity. The functionality of the URL Shortener is being replaced by Firebase Dynamic Links (FDL), which offers smart URLs, directing users to locations within Android, iOS, and web-based applications.
