An impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Varma has been put forward by a significant number of parliamentarians. The motion, backed by 145 Lok Sabha members, was presented to the Lok Sabha Speaker and cites constitutional provisions related to the removal of a judge. This action follows an in-house inquiry prompted by the discovery of partially burnt cash at Justice Varma’s residence after a fire. The motion encompasses support from several political parties, with notable MPs such as Rahul Gandhi, Anurag Singh Thakur, and others lending their signatures.
In a parallel development, the Rajya Sabha Chairman, Jagdeep Dhankhar, revealed the receipt of a motion supported by 50 Rajya Sabha MPs, also aiming for Justice Varma’s impeachment. He noted that this motion satisfies the necessary requirements to initiate the removal process under the law. During proceedings, the Law Minister was asked if a corresponding motion had been tabled in the Lok Sabha. Justice Varma has contested the findings of the inquiry committee, claiming he was denied a fair chance to present his case. This legal challenge comes amidst the commencement of the Parliament’s monsoon session and follows the incident where cash was allegedly found after a fire at his residence.
