BJP MP Sambit Patra has accused the Congress of exhibiting double standards on the Aadhaar issue following the Supreme Court’s ruling on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. Patra criticized the Congress and other opposition parties for what he perceives as a shift in their position regarding Aadhaar’s use in electoral reforms.
According to Patra, the opposition previously opposed linking Aadhaar with voter ID cards, but they are now demanding its inclusion. He stated that this inconsistency proves their “double standards.” He recalled the Prime Minister’s statements in Parliament about Aadhaar’s role, which were met with opposition. Additionally, he referenced the Congress’s legal challenge in 2022 against the government’s decision to link Aadhaar with voter cards.
Congress MP Jairam Ramesh responded to the court order by accusing the Election Commission of India (ECI) of misinterpreting the decision. Ramesh posted a copy of the court order, highlighting the lack of any stay. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi also welcomed the Supreme Court’s ruling, while criticizing ECI sources for misrepresenting the court’s order. The Supreme Court has permitted the Election Commission to proceed with the SIR of electoral rolls in Bihar and also directed them to consider allowing Aadhaar, ration cards, and voter ID cards as acceptable forms of identification.
